Can I Get Free Electricity With Solar Panels?
This is a question we get asked often as reputable solar installers and the answer may well surprise you.
In short, with modern panels, yes it’s definitely achievable to harness enough power from the sun to reduce your electricity bills to £0. With the right export options you can also benefit from additional revenue selling back to the grid.
Factors To Consider
One key thing to consider when discussing the topic of “free electricity” is generation peaks.
Throughout the summer months your solar panels will generate more than your home requires and some of this excess will be sold back to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme.
In the winter months your system will generate less than you need, meaning that you’ll either need to rely on your battery system or purchasing some electricity from the grid.
When solar companies estimate your monthly bills its taken on an average of the year, so the months that you’ll be making more from larger exports and the months you are generating less and purchasing electricity from the grid will roll into an average energy bill.
Many of our clients see this average sub zero meaning that across the year they are benefiting from free electricity as a result of their solar panels.
Free Electricity From Solar Examples
In the above images, you’ll see our clients solar system generated 342% of their annual energy usage. This meant that in the summer months they generated considerably more, allowing them to recuperate costs at these times.
It’s important to note that this client had a low energy usage, meaning that their system was able to generate well over their need giving them significant returns.
In this example our client had a higher usage than the last, but still with their solar system they were able to generate almost double their annual usage giving them plenty to sell back to the grid.
Looking at the System Performance, you can see that their system generated marginally less throughout January, November and December however across the year averaged an electricity bill of roughly -£40.

Can I Get Free Electricity Every Month?
With the right system, yes absolutely. Even with the decline in generation in the winter months.
If you plan appropriately, you can get your battery to store excess energy in the months your system is over generating to make up the shortfall in the winter months.
With this done correctly you will be able to benefit from free electricity all year long.
For this to work it will depend on your system size, battery size and usage.
Final Thoughts
It’s important to note that not all solar systems will provide you with free electricity. It depends on the system size, your energy usage and your location.
However when we provide you with a free, no obligation survey and quote we will identify how much you will save on your electricity bills and how much your system will generate over the year.
